NAVAL AIR FACILITY MISAWA, Japan – Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Far East Detachment, Misawa hosted a change of charge ceremony here, Nov. 5, 2010.
During the ceremony, Navy Chief Warrant Officer Garcia Gaither assumed charge of the command from Navy Chief Warrant Officer Patrick Jones.
Jones, a 26-year Navy veteran, had led the command’s 30 personnel for more than three years.
“It was a very successful tour and that was mainly due to the outstanding deckplate leadership of the Sailors and civilian leadership we have here,” said Jones. “They are directly responsible for our myriad of command achievements.”
Jones noted that highlights during his tenure included the establishment of breakthrough-communications connectivity between Commander Task Force 72 and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s airborne assets; being the First NCTS Far East Local Network Servicing Center site authorized to operate unclassified and classified networks in the region; and becoming the first Electronic Key Management System Vault in the Western Pacific to reconcile its vault.
While operating as officer in charge, Jones, a native of Orlando, Fla., says he embraced a passage from the Bible that emphasized his command ideology.
“My philosophy is Proverbs 27:17: ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another,’” he said.
Perhaps the success of this philosophy can best be seen by his Sailors’ own accomplishments and command achievements.
“We produced two [limited duty officers], three chief petty officers and promoted several of our junior personnel,” said Jones. “I think we emphasized the training and building up of our Sailors as future leaders in this fine Navy, in addition to making them aware that we are here to ensure their success as well-rounded sailors.”
Now that Jones has passed along the reins, he will soon check aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) as the electronic data processing officer.
And while the detachment’s future will no longer be driven by Jones, his successor is looking forward to continued success.
“In a short amount of time on board, I’ve witnessed the professionalism and mission commitment of this command’s personnel,” said Gaither, who originally hails from Winnsboro, S.C. and is a 17-year veteran of the Navy. “I look forward to continuing these efforts.
“As the Navy continues to evolve, he said, “we’ll be right there alongside.”
