BAGHDAD - When units need materials to enhance base force protection, assist the Iraqi Security Forces with building checkpoints or any other construction projects, they call on the Class IV yard to help them efficiently accomplish the mission.

The last Class IV yard in Iraq is located at Joint Base Balad, and has saved the United States military more than $15 million, said Sgt. Maj. Jimmie Cooper, S4 sergeant major for the 36th Engineer Brigade and Class IV yard manager.

“The bases that are closing have excess material, which is then shipped to us,” said Master Sgt. Gregory Charles Wendt, the Class IV yard noncommissioned officer-in-charge with the 724th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, from Clayton, Wis.

“We inventory it, find out if it’s serviceable, then get it ready to be shipped back out to a unit in need.”

“We provide materials for every construction project going on in Iraq,” said Spc. Christopher Rhodes from Monroe, Wash., a technical engineer with the 724th Eng. Bn.

“We’re an oversized Home Depot for the forces in Iraq.”

The Class IV yard recycles many different types of construction materials that can be utilized on and off the bases in Iraq, including the checkpoints for Iraqi Security Forces.

“Some bases are still building living areas, dining facilities, post offices and guard towers,” said Rhodes. “Force protection is still a big project for us also.”

“We carry basic construction material, which includes lumber, electrical items, and a full line of plumbing such as showers, toilets, pipes and valves,” said Charles. “We also have Hesco barriers and barbed wire.”

The Class IV yard currently has approximately 150 shipping containers filled with the supplies that are distributed throughout Iraq and Afghanistan. As the reconstruction of Iraq continues, the 724th Engineers and the Class IV yard will continue to disperse supplies to units to help them accomplish missions.
