YORKTOWN, Va. – Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown hosted 47 cadets from the Camden County Cam/Tech High School Junior Leadership Program of Camden, N.C., Nov. 2.

Training Center Yorktown took center stage to provide the first opportunity for the cadets to experience Coast Guard missions and the capabilities of the Training Center.

The cadets, ranging from 9th to 12th grade, toured the Yorktown facilities including the fire-fighting trainer at the Damage Controlman “A” School, the gun deck at the Gunner’s Mate “A” School and the buoy channel at the National Aids to Navigation School.

Additionally, the Boat Forces Center took the cadets for a ride aboard a Coast Guard 41-foot Utility Boat. The Aids to Navigation Team from Milford Haven, Va., set up a static display of a 26-foot Aids to Navigation Boat demonstrating how their mission is accomplished on that platform.

The cadets, led by retired Coast Guard Capt. Al Keith, are part of a new leadership enrichment program, which is similar in style to Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. In its first year the program has drawn more than 100 students from two Camden County high schools.

For more information on the Coast Guard Junior Leadership Program, contact Lt. j.g. Anne Mulhern at 703-235-1872.
