WESTHAMPTON BEACH, N.Y. -- Members of the 106th Rescue Wing took part in a Operational Readiness Exercise, Nov. 7, at F.S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach, N.Y.
The 106th Rescue Wing summoned its willingness and readiness while charging headlong into its phase-two-operational-readiness exercise, Saturday, Nov. 6.
Base-wide, organizations prepared scenarios to test their professional-operational skills, and to demonstrate their ability to survive and operate under conventional, and biological and chemical attack.
One organization, The 106th Medical Group’s Public Health Flight prepared a food-borne illness scenario. The exercise scenario spilled over in to a real world exercise when rumors spread that contaminated meals-ready-to-eat were issued during the ORE. The rumor stemmed from an actual food recall that occurred several months ago when MREs with certain lot numbers were recalled for possible Salmonella contamination to the dried vanilla and strawberry shake mixes.
According to the new Public Health Officer here, Lieutenant Cynthia L. Spragg and acting non-commissioned officer in charge Staff Sgt. Kenneth Padilla, the shake packages were removed from the meals in the inventory here and destroyed per All Food Act instructions. Several cases of MREs were found in supply under embargo by the public health office pending further disposition.
According to Lt. Spragg, one person complained of feeling ill right after eating an MRE Saturday during the exercise, but the illness did not meet the case definition of Salmonellosis in that the disease has an incubation period of 12 to 24 hours before symptoms are evident, and a defined case must have at least two bouts of diarrhea, possibly accompanied by other symptoms after that time period.
Public health and other medical staff alerted the UCC of the lot numbers and the MREs were inspected during the exercise as part of the exercise. According to the public health office, none of the suspected lot numbers were found in use in the field during the ORE.
