    1st Marine Division

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan— The Marines and sailors of 1st Marine Division (Forward) paid tribute to the lives and service of their fallen brothers lost since Oct. 10, during a Colors and Memorial ceremony at Camp Leatherneck, Nov. 19.

Twenty-three Marines and sailors with 1st MarDiv (Fwd), including ten wounded warriors, some of who served in the same unit as the fallen, marched forward to honor their 23 brothers-in-arms by placing their identification tags on the 1st Marine Division Memorial monument. Each of their names was read off, followed by a ring of the bell.

“Being a part of this ceremony was a great honor. I loved those Marines,” said Sgt. Philip McCulloch, Jr., with the personal security detachment and mobile assault platoon, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. “I did not know everyone from 3/5 that was killed-in-action, but four were from my company. It puts you at peace a little more to know this ceremony was done for them. They will never be forgotten.”

The 1st MarDiv (Fwd) held two ceremonies before, honoring the 96 division service members killed-in-action since assuming responsibility March 20, as the ground combat element of Task Force Leatherneck. The 1st MarDiv (Fwd) Memorial monument will stand proudly in front of the division headquarters building as a daily reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by our fallen heroes of the division, to include the soldiers of the British 40 Commando and the 31st Georgian Battalion.

The monument now holds 119 dog tags of the Marines, sailors and coalition partners, who gave all for their country, and the safety and security of the Afghan people.
The ceremony came to a close as the American, Afghan, and Marine Corps flags were lowered as Staff Sgt. Mark Reheard, from the 1st MarDiv (Fwd) band, played “Taps.”

“This ceremony is a good way for us to remember our fallen brothers,” said McCulloch Jr., a 22-year-old native of Galveston, Texas. “It lets everyone who wasn’t out there know what these Marines gave for their country and their Marine brothers."
