PANJSHIR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - The Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team visited with a government official and village elders during a shura at a local all-girls school to assess projects requested by the Tawaqt Village in Panjshir province, Nov. 20.
Local elders submitted a project request to the district governor, who regularly gathers requests from across the district. He later prioritizes them for the PRT to review.
Luckily, repairs to the local all-girls school made the list.
At the school, the government official and the village elders showed the PRT personnel different areas of the school they thought needed attention. After the PRT’s initial tour, the government official and the elders sat down for tea and discussed future opportunities for the school.
“We want to encourage the people to go to their government,” said U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Phil Compton, Panjshir PRT Engineering Department assistant officer in charge. “In the meeting they didn’t ask us to do the work for them. What they asked us specifically to do was to give them some sort of engineering guidance so they can understand the feasibility of doing these projects when they go to the provincial development council.”
During the meeting the attendees discussed a number of planned improvements to the school, which include well repair and building a wall around the school for religious and cultural reasons.
Currently, more than 400 girls, from Kindergarten to 12th grade, attend the school.
