KABUL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Afghanistan - The Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team surveyed a local river on Nov. 20 for a suitable location to build a micro-hydro-electric generator to supply many local villages in Panjshir with power.
The generator feeds water into a tube, turning a small turbine and creating energy. The micro-hydro-electric generator will not contaminate the water supply, or alter its natural flow.
Engineers from the PRT measured the depth and slope of the flowing water in various places to ensure the best quality power output for villagers.
“One advantage of the micro-hydro is that it is able to produce the most amount of power in the summer when the demand for power is highest due to people running air-conditioning units,” said Daniel Fredrikson, Panjshir PRT Engineer.
Finding a suitable location for a micro-hydro is often the most difficult part of building one for people in need of power.
“Location is the biggest thing,” Fredrikson said. “Building on a site needs as much water flow as possible, and as much vertical drop in space as possible.”
If a suitable location is found the generator could provide power for hundreds of local homes, with generator construction taking less than a year.
