ZABUL, Afghanistan – U.S. Navy SEALs collaborated with Afghan villagers to improve the Nawbahar District Center Nov. 22-30 in Nawbahar District, Zabul province.
The project focused on rebuilding the bazaar’s roof, cleaning and repairing damaged buildings, and refurbishing the walls of the district mosque.
All work was completed by Afghan labor, with oversight by SEALs.
The goal of the project was to improve the district center, establish the local bazaar as the primary commerce center and, over time, improve the local economy, said a U.S. Navy SEAL team member.
“The program has been a huge success and has employed 10 Afghans a day,” said a Combine Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan official. “Villagers have been eager to participate and there has been an overwhelming turnout for the program. This program has boosted the local bazaar economy and has established the Nawbahar Bazaar as the district center.”
