MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Shauna Sentell, a 23-year-old East Hampton, Conn. native, spent her day learning how to be a Marine by running an obstacle course, learning how to fire machine guns and riding in large military vehicles. Donning a flak-jacket and helmet, some may mistake her for a United States Marine, but in reality she was getting a glimpse at the work life of her Marine husband, Lance Cpl. Daniel Sentell, during a ‘Jayne Wayne Day’ hosted by Regimental Combat Team 8, Nov. 23.
Shauna and Daniel both heir from East Hampton but lately have been enjoying a life together as man and wife in Jacksonville, N.C., after the couple wed in February this year. The two have recently purchased a house and are beginning to settle into the military lifestyle.
“I am ecstatic!” said Shauna. “We are starting a new life exactly how we want it to be. A lot of people were upset about us moving, because it was a sudden thing, but our true friends supported us.”
If the transition from Connecticut to North Carolina was not difficult, going from a civilian lifestyle to a military surrounding can prove to be an obstacle. To fight the stresses and uncertainties that many spouses may have, the regiment decided to sponsor a ‘Jayne Wayne Day,’ where the family and spouses of Marines within the regiment could spend a day learning about some of the common occurrences their Marines encounter.
“I really enjoyed the gathering of every one because I haven’t met a lot of the Marines in Dan’s shop,” said Shauna. “It was nice to be given a chance to talk to people. I got a much better insight to what he does. This made it a reality.”
The participants not only got a chance to see firsthand what a Marine’s life consists of, but they also got to meet other spouses and families who may have moved here from out of state and be in similar situations.
“I’ve been away from her a lot lately and it makes me feel better that she now knows what it is I’m doing,” said Daniel. “It was also good for all the wives to meet everybody. They all had opportunities to make new friends.”
Throughout the daylong event, the Marines and families ate Meals, Ready to Eat, rode in armored vehicles, shot machine guns on a range simulator, ran an obstacle course and learned some Marine Corps Martial Arts. At the end, each attendee received a shirt, certificate and a group photo, so they will have something to hold onto and remember.
The event was success, and as for the Sentells, they were able to leave with more understanding and clarity as to what their future with the Marine Corps has in store.
“I don’t regret making the decision,” said Shauna. “We miss everyone back home dearly, but being a Marine wife is a whole different lifestyle and I am going to continue to learn and experience more things.”
