MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Marines from 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group conducted training scenarios here, Nov. 24-Dec. 4 to help prepare them for what they may face on future deployments.
“The training we are doing here is to build us up for deployment,” said Staff Sgt. Joseph Gomez, operations chief, heavy equipment platoon, Support Company, 7th ESB, 1st MLG. “One of the main things is to make sure the Marines are ready to handle the unexpected.”
The Marines with 7th ESB honed the skills that had helped many others who deployed to Afghanistan. They focused on several different types of training scenarios from water purification to constructing new roads or fixing old and damaged ones.
Several different sections within the battalion carried out missions specific to their skill set. The Heavy Equipment Platoon Marines fixed some of the dirt roads while at Red Beach the water support technicians side of Utilities Platoon drained water from the Pacific Ocean. The water support technicians provided water for the rest of the battalion who were training. They drained water from the ocean with a machine called the Tactical Water Purification System. This air and mechanical processed giant can drain and purify 1,200 gallons of water per minute.
“It’s our job to support the other Marines with drinkable water and water for showers and laundry,” said Lance Cpl. Johan Gomez, water support technician, Utilities Platoon, Support Company, 7th ESB, 1st MLG. “Each section has different jobs, but they are all important to the mission,” said Lance Cpl. Gomez, from West Newark, N.J.
While some of the Marines were refreshing their memory of the skills they had learned on previous deployments, other Marines who had not deployed were learning the skills for the first time. This was a great chance for the experienced Marines to pass their knowledge on and mentor the younger Marines.
“The Marines are doing very well,” said Staff Sgt. Gomez, from Chicago. “They started off a little shaky at first, but after awhile they started to get used to what they were doing and really stepped up to the task.”
This training evolution is just one of many to come for 7th ESB before they deploy to Afghanistan in the upcoming year.
