CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq - More than 600 service members gathered to cheer on their fighters in one of the biggest “Fight Night” events to date, held Nov. 28 in Memorial Hall at Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq.
Hosted by the soldiers with the 15th Transportation Company, 110th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 224th Sustainment Brigade, 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), fighters assembled from various brigades and locations in Iraq and Kuwait to compete in this mixed martial arts contest.
All 24 fighters in weight classes from 140 to 210 pounds received a certificate of achievement, and the winners received medals.
Sgt. Parvin Rosario, property book non-commissioned officer with the 240th CSSB, 224th Sust. Bde., and a Camden, N.J., native, who won his fight in the first round by technical knockout, described how he trained for his fight.
“I did Brazilian jiu-jitsu with Lt. Col. Gary Gillian with the 703rd ID [Infantry Division], including punching and kicking," said Rosario. “I ate grilled chicken, cauliflower, and rice every day for lunch. I went from 200 to 165 pounds. I’m a first-time competitor. I want to knock him out.”
Spc. Melissa Borjas, storage system manager with the 224th Sust. Bde., and a Santa Ana, Calif., native, said that she was unable to compete because her opponent decided not to fight.
“My opponent backed out, but I’m here to support my guys,” she said. “Hopefully I’ll have a fight next time. You don’t see a lot of females. I’m representing females to show that we can get out there. I can’t wait to represent the 224th [Sust. Bde.]”
Borjas described how she trained for the fight. “I hit the mats with Sgt. 1st Class Oliveros,” she said. “I trained a lot with weights for the past couple of weeks. I worked a little bit with Sgt. [Courtney] Anderson on the ground game.”
Anderson, the post fight instructor with 15th Trans. Company, and a Los Angeles native, worked with Borjas. He described how he trained his fighters.
“I wanted fighters to understand that closing the distance is most important, especially while being deployed in a combat setting,” said he said. “You can defend yourself on the battlefield, as well as your buddies.”
Anderson said that he focused the ground game training on Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and that the stand-up training included Muay Thai kickboxing.
“I thank garrison command for giving me the position of post instructor to train Soldiers in defensive measures,” added Anderson.
