CAMP ADDER, Iraq - If you were to ask the majority of people in the United States how they spend their Thanksgiving and then asked that same question to one platoon in Iraq, you may be surprised to find their responses are not very different.
“We’ll be spending Thanksgiving traveling the roads with family going to visit family and friends,” said Sgt. 1st Class Marc Guillory of Colorado Springs, Colo., platoon sergeant, headquarters battery, 3rd Battalion, 29th FA Regiment, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.
Guillory’s platoon serves as the battalion commander’s protective services detail. Their mission is to provide security and movement for 3rd Bn., 29th FA Reg. commander, Lt. Col. Jon Howerton, during key leader meetings with Iraqi leaders and conducting battlefield visits to soldiers living at outlying camps.
This Thanksgiving, the platoon provided movement security for the commander, Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Miller, and United States Division – South Deputy Commanding general – Support, Brig. Gen. Dragon, as they visited soldiers at various camps.
“The roads traveled are a little different and the turkey is not quite like mom makes it, but many things are the same. We’ve spent every day together over the last eight months. We train, live, eat, and conduct missions together. So for our platoon, we are a family,” explained Guillory.
The trip to Camp Ur allowed the command team to serve Thanksgiving lunch to the soldiers of Company A, 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd AAB, who are attached to the battalion.
