CAMP WESSAM, Iraq – For the past eight months, Company B, 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, has been partnered with the 14th Iraqi Army Division Commando Battalion. They’ve trained together and conducted operations together, forging a strong relationship that has been beneficial for the people of Basra province, who rely on the security the 14th Division provides.

Fortifying their relationship, which stems from the beginning off the deployment, Company B has assisted a commando platoon to locate and detain one of 14th Division’s most wanted terrorists. Since then, Company B has conducted nearly 20 missions with Iraqi forces.

“This really set the conditions for a great year together,” said Capt. Ari Martyn, commander, Company B. “We use each mission as an opportunity to help the commando leadership evaluate their platoons. This drives what we do for training in the following weeks.”

On one such raid, Company B identified some gaps in the commandos’ standard operating procedures for tactical site exploitation, or the search for critical evidence and information. Having conducted a thorough after-action review, the Iraqi army leadership asked Company B to assist in revamping their tactics, techniques and procedures. They also asked for help in creating a training program to implement the changes.

Company B officers worked with their Iraqi counterparts to improve the Iraqis’ procedures which paid off during the next mission, where the leadership from both units noticed a great improvement in tactical site exploitation.

Recently, Company B has been working to improve the Iraqis’ ability in executing warrant-based apprehensions. Noncommissioned officers from 1st Platoon conducted classes on tactical questioning and advanced uses of global positioning systems.

    PARTNERSHIP

Already, the 14th Division’s commandos have conducted a precision raid without the assistance of U.S. forces leading them to the objective. Company B has a goal to make this the norm before the 1st Bn., 68th Armor Regt. redeploys.
