FORWARD OPERATING BASE RUSHMORE, Afghanistan - Paktika provincial government leaders joined coalition forces at Forward Operating Base Rushmore to honor 15 graduates of the Sharana Center for Education Excellence here Dec. 13.
The Sharana CEE provides workshops for Afghans where they can learn skills like carpentry, masonry and plumbing.
“This training is very valuable,” said Paktika Gov. Moheebullah Samim. “This is a great opportunity for citizens to participate in training and provide services for Afghanistan.”
According to the governor, this was the fourth CEE graduation in Paktika this year. While each student received a graduation certificate and handshakes from coalition forces and provincial leadership, Samim’s message set the tone of the ceremony as he addressed the former CEE students.
“I’ve seen your work and skill on many projects,” he told them. “They are tremendously high quality, and you should be proud of the skills you have. You will definitely find a job with the skills you have learned.”
Regarding job opportunities, the governor reassured the graduates he and the rest of the provincial government would support them in finding jobs if necessary. Samim encouraged them to take pride in their newfound skills sets and use them honorably to earn money to provide for their families.
“You will be serving this country,” he said, addressing the graduates. “You are the door of development for this country and you will bring development to this province.”
Samim also asked the graduates to work very hard and train others to support the training efforts in Paktika. The chairman of the provincial council, Dr. Nawab Waziri, also addressed the graduates as they stood in formation at the ceremony.
He explained that about 80 percent of the people in Paktika faced unemployment because they don’t have the right expertise.
“Your skills need to be used for the development of your country,” Waziri told the graduates. “In the future, you will be helping the country and have job opportunities to support your family.”
Both Samim and Waziri expressed gratitude to coalition forces and development teams like Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team for their partnership in supporting development. Following the speeches, each graduate came forward to receive his certificate and shake the hands of their government leaders and coalition partners.
“This is a great day for the graduates,” said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Donny Cox, Paktika PRT commander. “They can now apply their new acquired skill to help themselves and their families prosper while building a future for the people of Paktika province.”
