MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – The Marine Corps Exchange aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is currently going through construction that will provide service members and their families a one-stop shopping destination.

An extra 40,000 square feet will be added to the exchange, making room for more merchandise.

“We’re going to be bringing sporting goods, toys, guns, and lawn and garden care merchandise,” said Rob Jones, the project coordinator with the MCX, Marine Corps Community Services.

Construction at the MCX began in June. Now, six months into the project, construction workers have finished raising the walls and adding a roof to the new section.

“The construction workers actually just finished setting up the walls and roofing right before this cold weather set in,” said Jones. “It’s a great thing because we are still on schedule and they’re not all out in the cold.”

The $19 million project is slated for completion by October or November of 2011. Catherine Bruggeman, the MCX manager, said as each area becomes available to service members and their families, they plan on doing a small opening to let shoppers know what’s new.

“We plan on switching the whole exchange up,” said Bruggeman. “We’re going to get new lighting and most parts of the store will be moved to different areas.”

Bruggeman mentioned that the food court will be receiving a makeover as well, with the flooring, tables and chairs all being replaced. Throughout the transformation process, the MCX, pharmacy and GNC will not be closed, although certain parts of the MCX will be inaccessible due to construction.

All of the new merchandise to include toys, exercise equipment, and lawn and garden care will be brought in from the Hadnot Point Exchange. Another addition to the MCX will be a military clothing section.

In the new military-specific section, service members can come and buy military essentials ranging from boot socks to uniform jackets.

“For a while, this place will get pretty torn up with all the renovations,” said Bruggeman. “But we will try and make the process go as smoothly as possible. And make it a true ‘one-stop shopping’ experience for our customers.”
