CAMP ADDER, Iraq – Missing two band members did not stop the 4th Infantry Division Band “High Altitude” from performing in front of eager spectators at the Iron Stronghold Resiliency Center Dec. 10.
The band performed with the help of three volunteers from the 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 4th Infantry Division: Spc. Miguel Garcia, Spc. Barton Hutson and Maj. Rob Ginsburg.
“For us it’s a little bit scary but fun, and it’s a little exciting because you don’t know what to expect,” said Sgt. Francisco Esquer, a guitarist for “High Altitude.” “It’s great to see people get up there with us and just have a good time and lay down some music.”
Garcia, part of the brigade commander’s command security detail, played the drums for a few rock songs in the first set along with Maj. Rob Ginsburg, chaplain, 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment, who joined the band in the second set, playing the drums in a few more mellow songs.
“I would take him [Garcia] any day and play with him at any gig anywhere,” said Esquer. “The kid followed directions wonderfully and if you can get someone to follow you and the music stays together, you’re doing well.”
Ginsburg showed his talent on the drums, playing a few songs he didn’t know with only the song title and the tempo to follow along.
“Originally we tried to find some songs he might know,” said Esquer, “but the chaplain told us’ just tell me what the song is, give me a tempo and I will follow you,’ and he did just that.”
Hutson, a cavalry scout with 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, of Amory, Miss., took the stage singing “Simple Man” and playing acoustic guitar.
“I express myself through music. It’s great to be able to do what I love,” said Hutson happy that “High Altitude” gave him that chance to perform on stage and make others happy.
“The specialist did a wonderful job giving the song a great dark moody sound. He should get out there and keep singing,” said Esquer.
Despite the setback of having a few members missing because of challenges with air transportation, the evening was a success, with everyone having a good time.
The best thing about having [new] people on stage is not knowing what will happen, but seeing the enthusiasm and fun, and that makes it fun for the band, said Esquer.
