CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Service members and civilians celebrated Christmas Eve with a talent show at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan.
The talent show, “Camp Leatherneck’s Got Talent,” featured 28 acts, from singing and dancing to stand-up comedy, and lasted for three hours.
The event was sponsored by the United Service Organizations and it offered prizes ranging from gift cards to iPods. First place took home an XBOX 360 with Rock Band.
“Christmas is harder out here,” said Lance Cpl. Timothy Delpiero, assistant safety non-commissioned officer with 9th Communications Battalion, Regional Command Southwest. “For a lot of us, this is our first time being away from home for the holidays, so this helps keep your morale up.”
Raffle tickets were distributed before the show started and into the first intermission. Throughout the show, tickets were drawn and there was even a dance competition. The winners all received prizes and gift cards that were chosen off a Christmas tree.
Delpiero said that everyone who attended enjoyed themselves and it was a great way to spend a couple hours out of the office. Service members and civilians all had a chance to wind down and have a little fun with their second family here.
“It’s Christmas Eve, a time to spend with friends and family,” said Lance Cpl. Christopher Ridgeway, from Magnolia, N.Y., and a satellite operator with 9th Comm Bn. “If you can’t have your family back home, why not get together with your brothers- and sisters-in-arms. That’s family.”
