GALVESTON, Texas -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, completed deepening of the Galveston Ship Channel from 40 to 45 feet, Dec. 23.
Contract work consisting of placement area preparation, levee raisings, minor levee realignments as well as dredging of the channel with a 24” cutterhead dredge, was completed by King Fisher Marine Service Inc. of Port Lavaca, Texas.
“Deepening of the Galveston Ship Channel will allow larger vessels to navigate and transport cargo to the Port of Galveston,” said James Worthington, a project manager with the Galveston District, USACE. “The Corps’ dredging efforts provide reliable and safe navigation channels for ships and marine traffic, contributing to the strength of the nation.”
According to Worthington, dredging of the western part of the channel began in August 2009 with dredge material being placed on Pelican Island. Dredging of the eastern end of the channel began July 2010, with dredge material being placed in the San Jacinto Placement Area (known to most on Galveston Island as the East End Flats).
Vessels should coordinate with the Corps for specific channel depths, as shoaling may occur at any time.
