SHAIBAH, Iraq – The 4th Region Department of Border Enforcement graduated its first class of 18 medical students trained solely by Iraqi DBE instructors at the Shaibah Training Center here, Dec. 23.

The month-long course was taught by DBE instructors certified at the Iraqi Army course and was fully resourced with course material and text books by United States Division – South, Task Force Blackjack and the Iraqi Army, according to Maj. Anthony Parker, deputy team chief for the Shaibah Training Center Stability Transition Team, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.

“Some of the training aids were obtained through direct coordination by the Shaibah Training Center leadership and leadership at the Iraqi army academy. They had the full range of materials; books, medical training aids and audio/visual devices,” said Parker, a native of Tulsa, Okla.

“This class is the culmination of more than six months of concerted effort by the STT, 1st Infantry Division Surgeon’s Office, medical platoons from (4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment and 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment), the 4th Region DBE and both the DBE and IA training academies,” Parker added. “The skills the students learned will allow them to fill the roles of combat medic, medical staff and unit medical advisors, and allow 4th Region units to staff organic aid stations with certified personnel.”

The students learned how to prepare for a mission and what their duties would be, said medic Commissioner Hisham Ahmed Hanoon, lead instructor for the course.

“They studied the parts of the human body and how it functions; treatment for a full-range of injuries such as arteries, the head, chest, stomach and extremities; and CPR, giving injections, setting up an I.V., pharmaceuticals and how to treat shock,” Hisham said. “Basically how to treat every injury, depending on the medic’s capabilities and the circumstances they may come across on a mission.”

The newly graduated medics will be stationed throughout the 4th Region DBE, which covers Southern Iraq, Hanoon added.

“It wasn’t a very difficult course, thanks to the instructors,” said Hider Khaled Zeara, medic commissioner and course honor graduate. “They are medical specialists and know what they are doing, and they made it very easy to learn.”

Zeara said he will be stationed with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Brigade, 4th Region DBE, and that he is ready and able to do the job he has been trained for. “I enjoy doing this, and Insha’Allah, I would like to continue my studies to be a doctor one day.”

Hisham said his students are well-prepared to perform their duties at their new units. “I’m very happy for this day and proud of every one of the students who graduated today.”
