BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Vice Adm. Mark Fox, Commander of U.S. Naval Central Command, Fifth Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces, conducted on a two-day battlefield rotation in Afghanistan to visit with sailors and Navy commanders and get a closer view of Naval operations around the country.
During his visit he met with Vice Adm. Robert S. Harward, Commander of Combined Joint Interagency Task Force, to discuss the needs and progress of CJIATF operations around Afghanistan. During the meeting, the commanders exchanged ideas for use in each other’s area of operations.
“This visit is primarily a chance for me to take a look at all the sailors who are in my region to make sure I know what’s going on in their lives and what we can do to help support their mission,” said Fox. “We are in this long, really important fight, and for the first time in my service, we have a large number of sailors ashore. As we as a nation ramp up our efforts in Afghanistan, it’s important that sailors working in support of this mission are given the support and assistance they need to do their job.”
After meeting with Harward, Fox met with sailors and Marines during several “All Hands” gatherings. Fox talked to the sailors about operations in Afghanistan, and also held a question and answer session. Fox promoted several sailors, and gave coins to many more for their service.
“Vice Adm. Fox posed many questions to the sailors and Marines regarding problems we have, and what we can do to solve them. I really liked how he reached out to us with his questions,” said U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Backer, administrative assistant for Naval Central Command Forward Headquarters. “He was very informative. He related historical events to the present time, and I thought that was really a neat thing to do. I like how he not only appreciated the sailors, but also the Marines, airmen and soldiers. He congratulated us all on a job well done in Afghanistan.”
During Fox’s stay he also visited the Bagram Detention Facility and the flight line to meet with sailors and Marines working at both locations.
