CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – The Third Combined Joint Company Grade Officers’ Council met here, Dec. 30.
American company grade officers meet once a month along with international company grade officers for a social event.
“We have a U.S. Air Force Company Grade Officers’ Council, and once a month we try to get as many services to come and network with us as possible,” said Air Force Capt. Katie Mobley, 31. “At the last meeting we had British officers come.”
“This is such a great opportunity for people to meet other junior officers in other services so I would like for them to meet each other and network,” said Mobley, the councils’ president.
In addition to networking and socializing, the officers organize efforts to help Afghans and other service members.
“During our normal meetings we have had a clothing drive for Afghan children, gathered school supplies for the children at the hospital; also we do some work with the wounded warriors, and professional development,” said Mobley, a flight nurse, from San Antonio.
The theme of the councils’ third meeting was leadership and featured Army Col. Kenneth Murphy as the nights’ guest speaker.
Murphy spoke about leadership and the young officers’ role as leaders.
“You’ve got to be able to share information and analyze information as it comes,” said Murphy. “Keep a log, keep a journal and pass it along to the next person and participate in the decisions. You have to lead up and lead the people you are (in charge of).
“You owe it to yourself and the other officers around you to be informed, be a good staff officer and be honest,” said Murphy. “We need bright young officers both men and women like yourselves as our leaders for tomorrow.”
