    FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – An EF-3 tornado touched down on Fort Leonard Wood this morning, Dec. 31, destroying and damaging numerous training, barracks, and homes on the installation, with no serious injuries reported.

    Four people reported minor injuries and were transported to the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital on Fort Leonard Wood for treatment. The tornado cut a swath through several miles of the installation from the training areas to a family housing area.

    Fort Leonard Wood fire and rescue workers were called on scene at approximately 9:00 am. Extensive searches of damaged areas were conducted for possible injured personnel and emergency repairs were made to ensure that all broken or downed utility lines were rendered safe. Fire and rescue workers are expected to work through the night.

    Initial assessments have revealed that extensive to moderate damage occurred to numerous military training areas, moderate damage occurred to installation utility systems, and extensive damage occurred in one installation family housing area. Representatives from the post’s Garrison Command and Emergency Operations Center are working diligently ensure that emergency and essential services are being provided to all families members and military personnel who live on the installation.

    Communication systems and power on Fort Leonard Wood were down for a short period following the storm. Communication systems are back up and running, and post officials are working closely with area utility companies to restore power and gas throughout post.

    The Fort Leonard Wood Commanding General, Maj. Gen. David E. Quantock, released the following statement this evening: “The entire installation joins me in extending our sincere appreciation to all Fort Leonard Wood and South Central Missouri Region emergency response personnel and organizations and citizens throughout the area for the outpouring of support that they have extended to our families and service personnel.”
