FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – While the majority of tornado displaced family members have been relocated to permanent government housing elsewhere on post, many families continue to require household and other personal hygiene essentials. The Fort Wood community is working in a combined effort to ensure each family receives their necessary items.
An EF-3 tornado struck post Friday causing minor injuries to four people and greatly damaging several buildings, including military housing.
Soldiers and their dependents were provided with temporary, and in most cases, permanent government quarters only hours after the storm struck.
The following day, families were permitted to return to their homes to gather personal belongings for relocation but items such as brooms, mops, baby formula and detergent were permanently destroyed by the storm.
The Fort Leonard Wood Army Community Service has coordinated tornado recovery donations and many displaced families have received things ranging from clothing to kitty litter boxes.
“The collection center is still in need of several things, most importantly personal hygiene items,” said Brian Steele, an Army Community Service volunteer and former sergeant major of the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade operations cell. “Anyone interested in dropping off donations can do so at the USO or any monetary donations can be brought in here at the ACS building.”
One day after the damaging effects of the storm, ACS had established tornado claim support for the families affected. They also provide household items through their lending closet on a temporary basis.
Other contributions have come from Operation Homefront, the Laquay Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a local Lady Auxiliary chapter.
“There has been such an outpouring of help from everyone across the Fort Wood community,” said Capt. Erik Dubois, a soldier assigned to Bravo Company, 701st Military Police Battalion. Dubois’ wife was one of the four injured during the storm. “We are just so thankful for the help we are receiving,” he said.
Dubois’ wife was treated for a minor cut across her forehead and was released the same day of the storm.
The Fort Leonard Wood Army Community Service will continue to receive donations at the collection point located at the post USO for any family members affected by the New Years Eve storm. For more information, please call ACS at 573-596-0212 or the USO at 573-329-2039.
