CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait--- Third Army is at the helm of complex logistics supplying soldiers in over 20 countries with materials and mission-essential equipment, ensuring they maintain a high standard of mission readiness at all times by moving a steady stream of containers filled with supplies into theater.
Pilferage of materials from these shipping containers has recently become a problem, taking valuable assets out of the hands of units in a warzone.
The inconvenience it burdens units with is a large one, as the intended recipients expecting the contents of the containers to arrive in full, end up short-stocked on potentially essential items. In response to this, Third Army has begun to fit containers with Container Intrusion Detection Devices.
“The main focus of implementing CIDD's into theater is to provide units advance warning that containers in transit through Pakistan and Afghanistan may have been pilfered,” said Maj. Julie Stockelman, surface branch chief for Third Army’s logistics section.
Third Army has taken a proactive approach to pilferage and is providing better tracking of their resources, enhancing their battle-focused mission readiness by protecting the containers from multiple threats, including the placement of improvised-explosive devices and theft while they’re en route to their destinations.
“By receiving CIDD alerts while containers are in transit, units are able to inspect the container as soon as it is received at logistical hubs or other initial destination,” said Stockelman, “This allows units to determine if there is in fact pilferage, and if so, to immediately work materiel management solutions so there is minimal impact to the Warfighter.”
The U.S. Central Command Deployment and Distribution Center provides metrics on all pilferage reported within the CENTCOM area of responsibility.
“By analyzing these metrics, we will be able to provide information for higher headquarters to take measures to prevent future pilferage,” said Gunnery Sgt. Dixie Mann, an Okinawa, Japan native and an in-transit visibility specialist, with CDDOC.
The implementation of CIDD's by the Third Army team allows for better tracking of individual containers and their contents, reducing pilferage and increasing awareness about the safety and wellbeing of the materials that keeps soldiers Ready to Fight.
In response to a rise in container pilferage, Third Army has begun to fit their containers with Container Intrusion Detection Devices. The implementation of CIDD's into theater allows Third Army to better track and monitor the status of their resources, increasing mission readiness and enabling units to stay Ready Tonight.
