CAMP ADDER, Iraq – Soldiers of Headquarters Company, 422nd Military Police Company assigned to the 3rd Special Troops Battalion conducted reflexive firing exercises recently to sharpen their shooting skills.

Realizing shooting is a perishable skill, the MP's set up a range designed to be safe yet challenging and hosted a battalion marksmanship competition.

Planning for the range started weeks prior to the event. The biggest hurdle was making the range course realistic and challenging. But also, the range planners had to find the right kind of targets and spray paint to add to the realism.

“It wasn’t easy planning, especially trying to find all of the spray paint, but we wanted to make it as realistic as possible,” said noncommissioned officer-in-charge, Sfc. Thomas Kane, of Tampa Bay, Fla.

The MP Company, a reserve unit out of Bakersfield, Calif., set up the range and was excited at the idea of hosting the competition. Three soldiers from each company competed, with each soldier completing a series of reflexive fire movements such as engaging targets while moving and engaging different shaped targets within a time limit.

“It was a lot of fun getting to shoot our weapons since none of us have had the opportunity since Kuwait,” said Spc. Angelica Trujillo, of Bakersfield, Calif.

While soldiers carry their weapons every day in Iraq, most do not get a chance to fire them often.

Each company had its own firing line for the competition with leadership present to cheer them on. Lt. Col. William Edwards, commander, 3rd STB and Command Sgt. Maj. Leida Anderson, senior enlisted advisor, 3rd STB were both on hand to encourage their soldiers.

In the end, there could only be one winning team. The team from the “Hell Raiser” Headquarters Company won, successfully outshooting Headquarters Troop, Company A and Company B. Headquarters Company also had the No. 1 shooter in the competition.

“It feels good to be the best shooter out here today and show everyone that even officers can shoot!” said 1st Lt. Kyle Knowles of Colorado Springs, Colo., the top shooter of the competition.
