FORT BELVOIR, Va. -- As the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry, Fort Wainwright, Alaska prepared for a mission-rehearsal exercise and follow-on deployment to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, Defense Logistics Agency Pacific Troop Support and DLA Pacific warfighter support representatives in Alaska worked diligently to ensure timely procurement and delivery of critical items.

One hundred thirty TRICONs – triple containers – were procured and delivered to Fort Wainwright to meet the required delivery date of December 2010. TRICON containers are deployable and relocatable by helicopter lift, which enhances maneuverability for the battalions of the 1-25th Stryker Brigade Combat Team. The containers can be targeted for specific supplies or general support for smaller forward deploying units as they are out on patrols or embedded in local villages.

“The biggest obstacles were the procurement lead time and, after that, the long delivery lead time from the manufacturer to Fort Wainwright,” said Craig Bond, DLA Pacific WSR. “Since the requirements were submitted by the customer in late August/early September with a required delivery date of early December, these lead times had to be shortened as much as possible.”

These TRICONs, plus 111 received from 1st Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., will ensure the 1-25th SBCT can stage, stuff, and prep for shipment before surface movement that was planned for late December and early January with follow-on shipment in March to the CENTCOM AOR.

The DLA Troop Support contracting officer and customer container lead were instrumental in the numerous short notice and expedited solicitations and contracts without any protests, officials said. Separation of critical requirements coupled with multiple delivery sites for normal procurement and requisition action enabled the contractor to deliver what the government needs over several months providing the best value to the customer.

“DLA Troop Support did an outstanding job of recognizing the priority and criticality of need early in the process, providing professional expertise within the system, and expediting the contract solicitations and awards,” Bond said. “These actions cut procurement lead time literally by months.”
