ROTA, Spain - Seabees of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74, “The Fearless 74,” celebrated their second consecutive holiday season while deployed, Dec 31.

Leadership of NMCB 74 attempted to strengthen the bonds of their battalion with an extended Christmas weekend, a barbecue and sports competitions.

“As we are all making sacrifices and being away from our family and friends, I think this is a good bonding opportunity for the battalion to get together in a relaxed atmosphere and have some good camaraderie.” said Cmdr. Richard Hayes III, commanding officer of NMCB 74.

With the aroma of hamburgers and hot dogs and the sounds of cheering in the air, the feeling around camp was one of togetherness and celebration.

“Since we can’t be home with our families on Christmas, this is kind of a way for us to create a family inside the command, so we don’t feel quite as lonely,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Lauralie Gutschmidt, builder. “

NMCB 74’s Morale Welfare and Recreation team organized a non-alcoholic New Years Eve party on Camp Mitchell providing free snacks and various games, along with sparkling grape juice as a substitute for champagne, and following Spanish tradition, 12 grapes to quickly eat as the New Year’s bells rang.

Last year the Seabees of NMCB 74 supported Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, while this year they support the mission of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet.

The area of responsibility for Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa covers approximately half of the Atlantic Ocean, from the North Pole to Antarctica; as well as the Adriatic, Baltic, Barents, Black, Caspian, Mediterranean and North Seas; to include all of Russia, Europe and nearly the entire continent of Africa.
