FORWARD OPERATING BASE GHAZNI, Afghanistan - Polish, U.S. and Afghan soldiers attended the Great Orchestra of Christmas charity auction on Forward Operating Base Ghazni, Jan. 9. Similar events also occurred throughout Afghanistan where Polish soldiers serve.
Polish soldiers with Task Force White Eagle organized the charity event, which was also held in Poland. The event held on FOB Ghazni was the 19th of its kind. The world-wide events were designed to raise money for medical equipment to diagnose and treat children with kidney and urinary system problems.
Polish and U.S. units donated items for the auction, such as plaques, coins, mugs, calendars and books, just to name a few.
“Canopy”, the band from the Polish army’s 6th Airborne Brigade played during the auction, followed by magician Nelson Riogelon from FOB Ghazni’s logistics company.
A Strong Man competition and volleyball tournament were also held, and Polish soldiers treated FOB Ghazni residents to homemade pea soup.
Nearly $15,000 was raised during this year’s action among soldiers serving in Afghanistan, and more than $12 million has been raised world-wide. Since 1993, the Great Orchestra for Christmas Charity collected more than $122 million.
