MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – A California-based U.S. Army Reserve unit conducted its first training this past weekend in the newly completed Armed Forces Reserve Center, located just off Moffett Field, Calif.
The 351st Civil Affairs Command left its former home at Jones Hall in Mountain View, the month prior, but did not use the new AFRC until this past weekend. Jones Hall was the enduring home for command, which moved in shortly after its completion in the late 1950s, according to Col. Richard C. Perry, the Supervisory Staff Administrator for the command and former facilities manager for Jones Hall.
“The 351st, which is a senior unit and has units under it, spread throughout the western part of the United States has been headquartered or was headquartered there at Jones Hall for over 50 years,” said Perry.
Master Sgt. Terrence S. Crayton, a Mountain View resident and network manager for the command was instrumental during the decommissioning of Jones Hall and move to the AFRC. Crayton coordinated the move with several federal and state agencies, as well civilian service providers and contractors. Crayton said his biggest challenge was ensuring that all the agencies stayed coordinated and delivered on schedule.
“We had to shift a lot of dates, [and] shift a lot of coordination with those agencies [civilian contractors] to ensure it [installation of wiring] was done correctly,” said Crayton.
The project to build the AFRC started in January 2009 and was completed in November 2010. The move from Jones Hall to the AFRC took a little over a week and started just before Thanksgiving in 2010.
The 351st CA Command is not the only California-based unit to move. The AFRC is now home to several Bay Area-based units, from both the U.S. Army Reserve and the California Army National Guard.
“The intent was for the Army, the federal government and the tax-payer to save money by consolidating units here [at the AFRC] and disposing of the old centers, which of course, required money for up-keep and maintenance. Some are being handed over to other parts of the federal government,” said Perry.
Jones Hall, now vacant to military units, has been passed to the Veterans Administration. The VA has already sent engineers and contractors to survey Jones Hall to evaluate what the VA might do with the long-standing facility, according to Perry.
“It makes you feel good to know, it [Jones Hall] is going to be used to support soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, through the VA, to continue to do good things,” said Perry.
