MOSUL, Iraq - On the Streets of Mosul, Iraq is the last place you would think to find an Alabama Deputy Sheriff training and working side by side with Iraqi Police.
Jason Bankston, a deputy sheriff from Gulf Shores, Ala., currently works for DynCorp as an International Police Liaison with the Civilian Police Assistance Training Team located in Forward Operating Base Marez, Mosul, Iraq, as well as other locations throughout Iraq.
"My Primary job is to train and mentor the Iraqi Police officers," said Bankston. "It's going well, as they are quickly learning many new skills and tactics."
According to Bankston, law enforcement runs in my family, my father is a former State Trooper and currently running for Sheriff of Baldwin County, Ala.
"My friend told me about this opportunity and being a Baldwin County Deputy Sheriff, I new I had the initial qualification of having at least five years police experience in order to get hired," he said. "The job relies on a lot of the policing skills that an officer learns from academies and years on the job."
Bankston's current employer, DynCorp, is located out of Fort Worth, Tx., and conducts its officer training in Virginia through an evaluation process and then are provided their assignments throughout the world. Afghanistan and Iraq are the main focus of DynCorp's missions.
I love working in law enforcement and being able to come to Iraq and do my part by helping these people get back on their feet and be a more independent Iraq," Blankston said. " It is a very rewarding feeling watching these officers learn and start to take command of their own areas that people back home will never understand, but they will be able to see our results well after I'm done with my mission here."
