CAMP ATTERBURY JOINT MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ind. – Long lines, endless waiting and repetitive paperwork are what most soldiers think of when they recall military processing, but that wasn’t the case for the Indiana National Guard Soldiers of the 219th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade as they completed Soldiers Readiness Processing Jan. 7-10.

More than 400 Indiana National Guard soldiers from the 219th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade completed Soldiers Readiness Processing for their upcoming deployment to Iraq this spring.

There were 17 mandatory administration stations every soldier had to visit to ensure they received critical information and their records were correct and current.

Unit commander Col. Ivan Denton for the 219th BFSB was extremely pleased with the event. He said he thought the event served as a model for others to follow due to several key factors.

"This weekend's administrative SRP event was superb. The building was a perfect choice to execute an event of this magnitude,” Denton said. “Also the team did a great job of organizing the station flow. It made things go very smoothly. By spacing over 400 processing soldiers over three days, the lines and waits were minimized."

Master Sgt. Kristi Mabis, a senior human resources noncommissioned officer with Headquarters of the Headquarters Company, 219th BFSB, said the success of the SRP was due to key personnel and multiple Information Resources Planning meetings.

“I think the success of this SRP is because of my staff. We went through all the stations and determined how many people will man each station,” said Mabis.

Mabis said she focused on stations like Electronic Military Personnel Office, and Interactive Personnel Electronic Records Management System because more time was needed to process soldiers at these stations.

“I have been through an SRP before, and it seems like it drags on,” she said. “The key to the speed of this SRP was having key personnel in key positions, like EMILP and IPERMS, because we knew there would be a hold up in those areas. So we made sure to have enough personnel to man those.”

Spc. Brandon Obermiller, an infantryman with HHC, 219th BFSB, said the personnel working made the lines move quickly without overlooking information.

“They did their job proficiently and professionally, and nothing was skimmed over,” Obermiller said. “They inspected every piece of paper thoroughly to insure there were no errors.”

Obermiller said he realized the importance of the processes once he visited the legal station and was asked if he needed a will.

“It all sank in once I was asked about my will,” he said. “I realized the importance of these steps and the seriousness of the deployment.”

After Obermiller completed the SRP, he said he gained more confidence in his leadership because they took the time to answer his questions and discussed his concerns.

“I feel very confident in our leadership in this deployment,” he said. “A lot of new leadership has stepped in over the past few months. We gained a new first sergeant and a company commander, and I am looking forward to serving this next year overseas with them, getting the job done and winning the hearts of minds of people.”
