GALVESTON, Texas -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract Jan. 11, to King Fisher Marine Service LP in the amount of $4,621,749 to dredge the Matagorda Ship Channel from the Matagorda Peninsula to Point Comfort in Matagorda and Calhoun counties, Texas.
The contractor will use a cutterhead pipeline dredge to remove approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of shoal material from the channels.
“The corps is committed to keeping waterways open for navigation, which allows for the safe and expeditious accommodation of commercial vessels,” said Karl Brown, a project operations manager with the corps’ Galveston District. “The Matagorda Ship Channel is particularly important with the large amount of bauxite and petrochemicals received here that are used across the U.S., which contributes to the strength of the nation.”
Work is scheduled to begin about the middle of February and should be completed within 120 days.
