CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait - Three soldiers assigned to 1/201st Field Artillery, West Virginia Army Guard from W.Va. were promoted to the rank of sergeant during two separate promotion ceremonies at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, Jan. 21.
“I didn’t expect to get promoted this soon,” said Sgt. Leo Weikle, a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to C Company.“I was told there weren’t any available slots, so this is a surprise. I hope to be a good example to the lower enlisted.”
Weikle, a 2005 Greenbrier East High School graduate, has served in the National Guard for six years and this is his first deployment.
Sgt. Jason Cottle was promoted in the same ceremony as Weikle, with the C Company Commander and first sergeant, Cpt. Shawn Pratt and 1st Sgt. Stephen Allen, present.
“I’m excited and I’ll try not to make too many mistakes,” remarked Cottle jokingly, as fellow soldiers eagerly shook his hand after the promotion ceremony. “1st Sgt. Jason Hoffman, B Company 1st Sgt. is my role model and I hope to be as good of a role model as him for the lower enlisted one day.”
Sgt. Andrew Brooks, a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, HHC, was promoted to the rank of sergeant during a promotion ceremony in which the Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Clay Coatney, and HHC 1st Sgt. Scotty Richmond, attended.
Brooks, a Florida native and 2008 Marshall University graduate, has served in the National Guard for six years and says this is a nice conclusion to what could be his last year in the military.
“I was nervous but I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time,” Brooks remarked after the promotion ceremony. “This is probably my last year in the Guard, but I’m excited to use this promotion to build the next step in my life.”
All three soldiers are now contributing to the make-up of the Non-commissioned Officer Corps, which encourages strong morals, ethics and personal integrity while promoting competent leaders and role models for the lower enlisted. Promotions are a direct reflection of each soldier’s commitment and diligence to the improvement of themselves and their unit.
