BAGHDAD—As part of its wider effort to set up its Iraqi partner units for sustained success, 2nd Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center supported an Iraqi-led “train-the-trainer” course Jan. 8-13 on sensitive site exploitation at Joint Security Station Constitution, Iraq.

Sensitive site exploitation refers to a series of activities done after capturing an enemy sensitive site including examining documents, electronic data and material while neutralizing any threat posed by the site or its contents.

The six-day course taught 19 Iraqi Army officers with the 6th Iraqi Army Division on the importance of SSE, and how to set up a successful training program within their companies.

Capt. Hulail Luaibi Farag, with the 6th IA Div., was selected as the head instructor by Col. Mohammed Mahdi Cabea, based on his expertise in the field he gained during similar training he participated in during October.

The first four days of training involved classroom learning. Hulail instructed his students using a translated version of the SSE course content that is taught to U.S. soldiers. Hulail also encouraged his students to share their own experiences and to apply the content of the class to those situations, retrospectively.

“The training was extremely good for us and we will take a lot of information back to our units,” said Capt. Saady Khalif Shanoon Al-Ta'iy with the 6th IA Div.

“The IA [soldiers] are starting to truly grasp the ideas, to include the fundamentals and basics of the training,” said Sgt. Ryan Bessey, a team leader with 2nd Platoon, Company B, 1st Bn., 63rd Armor Regt., 2nd AAB and a Holland, Mich., native. “Now they just need to figure out how to integrate it within their own system, and obtain the materials and supplies.”

Bessey was selected to serve as an adviser to the training, based on his own training and experience in SSE operations.

The fifth day of training was a practical exercise that challenged students to operate as different members of an SSE team, and together, exploit a staged room. The purpose of this exercise was to allow the students to take what they had learned during the classes and combine it with their own techniques.

Hulail told his students that although they specifically may not be the soldiers actually conducting the SSE, they all needed to understand the site being exploited and how each duty is linked with it.

“I was impressed with the emphasis [the students placed] on keeping the site free of contamination,” said Sgt. Matthew Straub, a squad leader with 2nd Platoon, Company B, 1st Bn., 63rd Armor Regt., 2nd AAB and a Sterling, Ill., native. “These techniques are really going to help them out immediately.”

The final day of class featured a tour of the Joint Expeditionary Forensic Facility. “The tour clearly showed the cooperation needed between the officers of the 6th IA Div., U.S. forces, and the forensic evidence team from the Ministry of the Interior,” said Capt. Ishmail Assad Khalil with the 6th IA Div.

Their tour culminated with each student being awarded a certificate of achievement signed by Staff Maj. Gen. Ahmed Abaadi Chalab, commanding general of the 6th IA Div., and a CD containing the translated course content.
