BAGHDAD—If, as it has been said, that laughter is the best medicine, soldiers with Company C, 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, United States Division – Center, stationed at Joint Security Station Muthana, Iraq, should be feeling healthy after a Jan. 5 visit from a group of well-known comedians making their way through the country.
Early that afternoon UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters arrived at JSS Muthana with some unique and very welcome cargo—a troupe of volunteer comedians, including Walt Maxam, Lorrie Brownstone and Michael Colyar.
After landing, it wasn’t long until the three comedians began their show. The soldiers and performers shared a quick meal just before the curtain went up.
Once the comedians began their routine, soldiers were laughing almost continuously. Each comedian brought their own brand of humor and each was received just as well as the last.
The performers also didn’t mind letting the soldiers be part of the act, sometimes making them the focus of the joke, albeit in good humor.
“Getting to come here is one of the highlights of my career,” said Maxam, who opened the show.
Maxam was soon followed by Lorrie Brownstone, with her witty brand of comedy, and then finally, the headliner, Michael Colyar, took the stage.
Colyar’s routine was fast-paced, integrating a lot of physical movement and energy into his jokes. He entertained the soldiers for almost an hour.
By the end of his act, he had perspired almost completely through his shirt and was obviously exhausted. He finished with a few words of wisdom and advice to the soldiers watching, as well as thanking them all for their service.
“It means the world to me to be standing here in front of you right now,” Colyar said.
After the show was over, all of the performers spent some time with soldiers. They signed autographs, handed out T-shirts, and spent time taking pictures with soldiers.
