GALVESTON, Texas -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract, Jan. 19, to Gulf South Research Corporation, a small business, in the amount of $105,064.12 to conduct a survey of a dredge placement area and adjacent beach.
The survey will be used to determine the presence and use of the vicinity by the threatened Piping Plover and Snowy Plover along the Port Mansfield Channel in Willacy County, Texas. The beach will be surveyed for a linear distance of 3,000 feet north of the jetty.
“The Corps is employing an environmental management framework to provide structure and accountability within its business processes to help enhance and expand the positive impacts of its mission, while reducing, mitigating or eliminating the negative impacts,” said Alicia Rea, a project operations manager with the Galveston District. “As part of this framework, we’re surveying our dredge placement area and adjacent beach to ensure our work minimizes any impact to the Plover population, as we are committed to being good stewards of our environment.”
This contract is in conjunction with a larger contract awarded Dec. 3, 2010, to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company for dredge work at the Mansfield Entrance Channel in order to relocate 500,000 cubic yards of shoal material to North Padre Island.
According to Rea, the project was awarded using the urgent and compelling invitation for bids solicitation process and is funded 100 percent using supplemental dollars.
