KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – More than 20 Soldiers and Civilians attended a special meeting in recognition of their commitment to safety while deployed to a combat environment.
The 579th Engineer Detachment (Forward Engineer Support Team - Main) gathered for a unit safety stand-down day, and received certificates and award items in recognition of maintaining a zero-accident record during the unit’s deployment to Afghanistan.
“I’m very proud of our team,” said Rick Ferguson, FEST-M safety engineer and organizer of the unit’s first ever safety event. “We’ve been able to maintain a high-level of safety standard that I fully expected we’d achieve.”
Ferguson handed out “safety gear” to the team members so they would always be reminded of safety whether they were looking in the mirror or drinking some coffee.
“Everyday items such as a hat or a mug can prove to be a big difference at times,” he said. “I want my teammates to enjoy that cup of coffee to start their day. But I also want them to keep safety on their mind throughout their day as well.”
As the FEST-M continues its deployment in Afghanistan, Ferguson encouraged the team to stay alert as they near the end of their overseas tour.
“Even though we’re so close to being home, let’s make sure we all stay aware of our surroundings and stay ‘Army Safe,’” he said.
