MAZAR-E SHARIF, Afghanistan –The U.S. Army 358th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services) opened the first fully operational veterinary service facility in the northern region of Afghanistan, Jan. 19.
“Before the opening of our clinic, military police dogs would have to be transported to Bagram if they became sick or injured; now, we will be the new hub for all of RC North,” said U.S. Army Maj. Sandi Parriott of the 358th Medical Detachment. “This will make a huge difference in saving police dogs’ lives, especially when they are in need of immediate attention.”
Parriott continued to explain that the service of her detachment is not limited to military police canine veterinary support, but also the inspection of all meat and dairy products that are brought into the dining facilities on Camp Marmal. Strong academic backgrounds in microbiology, epidemiology and public health has always made veterinarians ideally suited for a role in ensuring quality food is being served to the troops.
Parriott concluded by saying that, “with the opening of our clinic we will be able to increase our military police dog force from approximately 25 to at least 100. These dogs help our mission here in so many ways, and are trained to carry out their own individual tasks as well as protect out servicemen and women.”
358th Medical Detachment supports Regional Command North Headquarters, located in Camp Marmal, Mazar-e-Sharif.
