    196th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade

CAMP EGGERS, Afghanistan – South Dakota Army National Guard soldier Sgt. 1st Class Jon Geise, of Aurora, S.D., was recognized by NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan commander Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV Feb. 18, for outstanding service and performance as the Department of Public Works non-commissioned officer in charge for the 196th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade’s Base Support Group at Camp Eggers in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Geise received a commander’s coin from Caldwell for bringing a new-building project up to electrical standards on Camp Eggers, which initially failed an inspection and was unacceptable for use due to electrical hazards.

“I appreciate the hard work of Sgt. 1st Class Geise,” said Caldwell. “We [NTM-A] push things around here pretty hard – training, mentoring, housing – and I know the only reason we're able to get it done is because leaders like him are working hard behind the scenes to make it happen.”

Using his civilian expertise as an employee of the South Dakota State University Physical Plant in Brookings, S.D., Geise took on the project, and in less than 14 days, completely rewired the facility – passing all inspections with no issues. The facility had sat empty for several months due to the incorrect wiring by a local contractor, and within hours of the final inspection, tenants began moving in to the much need office space.

“It might not seem like the biggest contribution, but he is enabling us to bring in more trainers so we can finish the work we started – building a capable Afghan security force,” said Caldwell.

Headquartered at Camp Eggers, NTM-A is one of the lead organizations responsible for training and mentoring Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police forces.

“Thanks again for your efforts – the folks back in South Dakota should be proud of you,” added Caldwell.

Geise’s duties as a contract officer representative [COR] for medium and large construction projects on Camp Eggers are instrumental in ensuring U.S. and coalition service members have a safe work environment. As a construction COR, he works with local Afghan companies to ensure the work is performed correctly and in a timely manner.
