FORT BELVOIR, Afghanistan -- Defense Logistics Agency Pacific and DLA Distribution are working together to find ways to reduce both transportation timelines and costs to move cargo in and out of Alaska.
The organizations are looking to use trucks to drive through Canada and deliver supplies to Alaska.
“Regular surface routes through Canada deliver to Alaska in seven to 10 days,” DLA Pacific officials said. “Over-the-road through Canada could provide expedited services if linked into DLA's West and East Coast distribution depots.”
This capability competes with air cost and delivery times and can move heavier material similar to a U.S. Transportation Command program in Europe, DLA Pacific officials said.
“It’s about two-thirds the cost for surface transportation versus air,” said Robert Sherrill, DLA Pacific Alaska warfighter support representative. “We would increase customer satisfaction, as well as lower cost.”
DLA Pacific and DLA Distribution employees recently met and had an informational briefing on the feasibility and possible testing of this initiative to reduce customer wait time and provide faster and best value service to warfighters in Alaska.
“This initiative has the potential to reduce transportation times by four to seven days in south-central Alaska and 14-22 days in the central interior of Alaska,” DLA Pacific officials said.
Currently, express air; organic and commercial air; roll-on, roll-off ships; container ships; and commercial sea barges are used for year-round distribution transportation to Alaska.
U.S. Transportation Command statistics provided to the U.S. Pacific Command Distribution Working Group indicated an average of 14 to 27 days for commercial and organic air to Alaska.
DLA Pacific and DLA Distribution will continue to work together to take this potential test forward to reality in the next quarter, Sherrill said.
