BAGHDAD, IRAQ – Congressman Joe Wilson from the 2nd District of South Carolina, and a retired South Carolina National Guard colonel, met with soldiers from his home state at the Joint Visitors Bureau hotel on Camp Victory, Feb. 22. Wilson was part of a congressional delegation visit that also included United States representatives from Alabama, Rhode Island and Guam.
Set against the backdrop of the Al Faw Palace located just across a lake from the JVB hotel, the soldiers were able to enjoy an evening meal with Wilson consisting of steak, ribs and barbecued chicken while visiting with the congressman for more than an hour. Nineteen Camp Victory soldiers from South Carolina were able to meet with Wilson, including 12 soldiers from the South Carolina Army National Guard’s 151st Expeditionary Signal Battalion, headquartered in Greenville, S.C.
"It was great to be visited by a true patriot such as Congressman Joe Wilson,” said Lt. Col. Richard A. Wholey Jr., battalion commander for the 151st ESB. “We were inspired by his words of praise and encouragement."
“It is an honor to be here with you today,” said Wilson. “I am very proud of the South Carolina Army National Guard. I am here to serve you and I have given all of you my business card so you may contact me for anything you need.”
As chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel, Wilson deals directly with issues that affect the welfare of the soldiers, such as personnel policy and reserve component integration and employment. The subcommittee recently held a hearing on Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs within the Department of Defense.
Wilson indicated this was his tenth visit to the area as a United States congressional representative, each time on a C-130 aircraft and he was honored to have the opportunity to make these visits.
