BAGHDAD, Iraq – More than 580 Iraqi Federal Police students graduated from an Iraqi Federal Police dignitary protection and personal security course at Camp Dublin Feb. 21.
The Iraqi Federal Police developed the course after Iraq’s Ministry of Interior leadership saw a need to establish personal security teams to support the March 2011 Arab League Summit, and to provide protection for Iraq’s civilian leadership in the future. The IFP took the initiative to organize and to teach a course that would fulfill that need, said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Michael Smith, director of United States Forces-Iraq’s Iraq Training and Advisory Mission-Police.
“[Hosting] the Arab League Summit is the first turning point in guiding Iraq to its equal place among the Arab countries,” said Iraqi Federal Police Maj. Gen. Ali al-Ithari, commander of the newly-established Security Detail Force.
The course instructors trained the graduates on specialized close-distance protection techniques and advanced-driving techniques, said Iraqi Federal Police staff Lt. Gen. Husayn Jasim Muhammad al-Awadi, who commands the IFP.
The graduation of this personal security detachment training shows the positive development of the Iraqi National Police special-training institution, al-Awadi said.
“It is very rewarding to see the progress the Federal Police have made in the past few years,” said Smith, a resident of Randolph, N.J.
