OKINAWA, Japan - As the water splashed and crowds cheered, only one thing floated through the competitors’ minds, "just keep swimming."

Students from the Department of Defense Dependent Schools competed at the high school and middle school dual swim meet Feb. 19 at Camp Foster’s 25-meter pool. The event was hosted by Marine Corps Community Service Semper Fit Aquatics.

It was determination that drove Kadena High School and Ryukyu Middle School’s boys and girls’ swim team, both from Kadena Air Base, to defeat Kubasaki High School and Lester Middle School’s swim teams.

“The boys did very well for themselves,” said Elizabeth McFarland, Kadena Elementary School teacher. “The [Kadena] girls were not as strong as the Kubasaki girls, but overall they, did very well for themselves.”

Kadena finished the swim meet with a combined team score of 376 points, topping off Kubasaki by nearly 100 points, winning 15 of the 22 individual and relay races.

The swim meet was exciting, and for the most part the races kept spectators at the edge of their seat, said Christine Geist, a teacher at Kubasaki High School.

For the boys 18 and under, Kadena dominated in the 50-meter freestyle, the 100-meter butterfly, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, 200-meter medley relay, freestyle, individual medley, freestyle relay and the 400-meter freestyle and freestyle relay.

Kadena’s boys won by more than 100 points, but, according to Geist, the fact Kadena had more boys was to their advantage at the swim meet.

For the girls 18 and under, Kubasaki defeated Kadena by more than 20 points, beating Kadena’s girls in almost all the same races as their male counterparts.

Mathew Luebbers, head swim coach, MCCS Okinawa Dolphins Swim Team attributed Kadena’s victory to the depth, quality and talent of their 18-and-under boy’s swim group.

“Both teams swam well, and there were many good head-to-head races,” said Luebbers. “Many swimmers had their personal best times, [which is] always a tough thing to do on a cool morning, but they got up and raced for their teams.”
