BAGHDAD, Iraq – NATO Training Mission-Iraq Deputy Commander, Italian Army Maj. Gen. Claudio Angelelli visited Iraq Training and Advisory Mission-Navy operations at Umm Qasr Naval Base, in Umm Qasr, Feb. 13.
Angelelli's visit comes one month after his mid-January visit to the Arabian Gulf Academy for Maritime Studies in Basra, and nearly a week after meeting with the head of the Iraqi Navy staff Rear Adm. Ali Hussein Ali Al-Rubaye, Feb. 7.
During the visit, Angelli was accompanied by ITAM-Navy Director, Brig. Gen. Simon T. Chicken. Both were welcomed by U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Kelvin Dixon, who serves as the director of United States Forces-Iraq's Coalition Navy Advisor Training Team.The visit consisted of a tour of Umm Qasr Naval Base facilities; a meeting with Iraqi Naval Base Commander, Commodore Adel; and tour two ships, one provided by Italy and the other by the United States. Additionally, Chicken briefed Angelelli on the Iraqi Navy's structure and officer education process.
Angelelli also took time to meet with NTM-I advisors to the Iraqi Navy who provided Angelelli with a complete view of the missions where NTM-I could provide support in Iraq beyond 2011.
The team intend to begin developing a plan by which NTM-I could support the Iraqi Navy's advisory needs.
