MARINE CORPS TRAINING AREA BELLOWS, Hawaii - When a riot breaks out or a terrorist act is committed, a specialized team is available to engage and assist in life-threatening situations on Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
Their training is hard and continuous, but the members of the Military Police Department Special Reaction Team work hard to ensure the base is a safer place.
Military and civilian SRT members trained at Nike Range here this week. The MPs exercised room clearing techniques, weapons safety, personnel recovery drills, evacuations and observational tests.
“We have a couple of new guys on the team so I want to go back to the basics of training,” said John J. Supple, civilian SRT team leader. “I want everyone to become familiar with each other and their weapons.”
The team started their day with warm-up drills and then progressed
to room clearing in abandoned dormitories used for training on the site.
Entry drills, hallway procedures and whole team floods were practiced for hours. The team members all stacked together back-to-back in a line quietly assessing the building for danger.
Supple led the instruction and stressed repetition of the drills to instill the movement and use of non-verbal commands to his fellow SRT members.
“No matter how much we train we can still fix the little bumps. We need unit cohesion to be efficient,” he said, ending with his trademark saying, “slow is smooth, smooth is fast.”
At the end of the training the team went over weapons familiarization and target distance estimation drills.
“I like working with all the different weapons we use,” said new SRT
member Billy P. Vellez, civilian MCB Hawaii police officer. “I’ve worked with the [MCB Hawaii] road unit for the past three years, but I never did anything this intense.”
SRT will continue their monthly range training and is working on
certifying their new members.
