BAGHDAD - Top Iraqi military leaders and telecommunications technicians met at the Ministry of Defense to develop a national implementation plan for the most current version of international Internet Protocol here Feb. 28.

The target of this conference is to discuss the change from Internet Protocol version 4 to IPv6, said Iraqi Army Gen. Babakir Badr-Khan Shawkat al-Zibari, chief of staff of the Iraqi Armed Forces.

“We should strive to ensure our technology is up to date, and this will guarantee fast and secure communications,” Babakir said, adding he was grateful for the assistance from the United States Forces-Iraq leadership for offering guidance and assistance in the process.

USF-I officials began working with MoD leadership two years ago in an effort to enhance the MoD’s Internet communications capabilities.

Internet Protocol version 6 allows for more Internet devices and users on the Internet, as well as extra flexibility in allocating addresses and efficiency for routing traffic. Additionally, network security has been integrated into IPv6’s design architecture and mandates IP security as a fundamental interoperability requirement.

“We are starting from scratch,” said Ahmed Izzedien, who manages Iraq’s Microsoft Learning Center here.

Incorporating this new technology will enable the Iraqis to begin to implement Internet systems that are on par with those used in the major technologically-developed nations, Izzedien said.

“We would like to create secure communications that are as fast as they are safe,” Babakir said, adding that he is confident in the progress the Iraqis have made thus far.
