CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait " United States Senator George Allen visited servicemembers from Virginia deployed here in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom Thursday.
Allen attended an office call with Maj. Gen. James A. Kelley, Third U.S. Army deputy commanding general, before eating dinner with Virginia troops at the Zone 2 dining facility.
Allen was passing through Kuwait on his way back to Washington, D.C., after visiting with troops and military leaders in Iraq and Kurdistan.
The intent of his trip was to assess the progress in the Middle East first-hand by talking with newly elected officials.
The purpose of his visit to Camp Arifjan was to learn about the camp, military operations in Kuwait and to visit Virginia troops.
He talked to the Virginia Soldiers about their hometowns and what they do in the military.
"It's always an invigorating experience spending time with the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who risk and sacrifice so much to keep us safe and defend our freedoms," Allen said.
Allen is a first-term senator and was a former governor of Virginia from 1994 through 1998.
