MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – A Marine with Fox Company, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, also known as the “Warlords,” received a Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device during an award ceremony aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., Feb. 25.
First Sgt. Chris J. Adams, the first sergeant for Fox Company, received his award from Brig. Gen. Christopher S. Owens, the deputy-commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force, for heroic actions in Afghanistan last year.
Friends, family and Marines gathered in the Warlord Room, at 2nd Battalion headquarters building, to watch Adams receive his award.
“It feels good to be here,” said Adams. “It was a very humbling experience. I was very honored.”
Adams, known for his leadership, has spent a career with the infantry and served as a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He has been cited multiple times for successfully leading his Marines through dangerous situations.
“I live by setting an example,” said Adams. “If the leader will do it, then the Marines will.”
According to the citation, Adams moved over 1,500 meters to an enemy fighting position to save a pinned-down squad, received gunfire, then closed over 300 meters to overtake an enemy position.
“This is the kind of first sergeant you want in your company leading the Marines,” said Owens while talking to the formation.
Adams served not only as a great role model for his junior Marines, but also for the platoon leaders and company commanders.
“The medal is extremely well deserved,” said 1st Lt. Conner Gentil, a platoon commander with Weapons Company, who served with Adams as a platoon commander in Fox Company, during the deployment. “I learned a lot of things from the first sergeant. He is stern, but fair, and is never afraid to be with the Marines in combat.”
After two years with the battalion, Adams prepares to return to Paris Island but said he is ready to return to an infantry unit and Afghanistan at any time.
The Marines and sailors of the 22nd MEU are in the early stage of their pre-deployment training program, which is a series of progressively complex exercises designed to train and test the MEU's ability to operate as a cohesive and effective Marine Air Ground Task Force.
The 22nd MEU is a multi-mission capable force comprised of Aviation Combat Element, Marine Tilt Rotor Squadron 263 (Reinforced); Logistics Combat Element, Combat Logistics Battalion 22; Ground Combat Element, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment; and the Command Element.
Marine Expeditionary Units are the Marine Corps' smallest permanent Marine Air-Ground Task Force, commanded by a colonel and comprised of approximately 2,200 Marines and sailors ready to provide immediate response in a hostile or crisis environment. While deployed, each MEU also incorporates two KC-130 aircraft available to support the unit's operations abroad.
