KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - This week’s Resolute Warrior Spotlight shines brightly on Pfc. London Anderson, a paralegal forward deployed to Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, with Task Force Resolute. This marks his first deployment.

Anderson joined the Army in late 2009 as a way to better his life and support himself. “The Army has made me more mature and determined, given me better self control, and taught me a strong work ethic,” said Anderson.

In addition to growing as a person, being in the Army also brought him to love of his life, wife Pfc. Davina Newsom. The two met while in basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Newsom is a finance clerk, currently deployed to Afghanistan with the 82nd Infantry Division, stationed out of Fort Bragg, N.C.

“She’s at another base, but we try to see each other as much as possible and I call her every night,” shared Anderson. “It’s a positive and negative thing having her out here because, I worry about her safety but it’s good too since we will return around the same time and we get to go on mid-tour leave together.” For mid-tour leave, the couple is planning a cruise of the Cayman Islands.

Being deployed to a combat environment presents challenges and stress different than serving in the rear. For Anderson, the hardest part of deployment thus far is the lack of variation in food and working without a day off. Finding a coping mechanism may help reduce the stresses of everyday deployed life. “For me, I deal with the stress my working out, playing my X-Box 360, and setting goals,” said Anderson.

Some of his goals include saving money to buy a Yamaha motorcycle, maxing out his military correspondence courses, furthering his education, obtaining his real estate license, and “getting diesel like in the movie 300.” His long term goal is to become an officer in the U.S Army.

To soldiers preparing for a deployment, Anderson shares some advice, “Pack light! Living quarters are somewhat small and it can get cramped. Also, a lot of companies will sponsor Soldiers for their deployments and send care packages.”

To his wife Davina, Anderson sends this message, “I love you and I can’t wait to see you.”
