CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan - The 240th Quartermaster Company, 129th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, manages a central receiving and shipping point and supply support activity warehouse at Camp Leatherneck.
The company’s CRSP yard is a holding area for nearly all containers coming on to Camp Leatherneck. The soldiers are responsible for escorting the containers from the base’s front gate to the yard and inventory them. The contents of these containers, which ranges from food to construction equipment, is distributed to the units on base, said Sgt. Thomas O’Neal, a 240th QM Company automated supply logistician from Marysville, Calif.
“Most of these supplies go to the Marine units here,” said O’Neal. “As we get containers in, we contact the units and make sure they get their supplies and materials as quickly as possible.”
The trucks that bring the containers to the yard are primarily driven by local nationals. Many of these containers are kept at Camp Leatherneck overnight. While these trucks are waiting to be unloaded, the 240th QM Company provides overnight accommodations and three hot meals to all Afghan nationals required to stay.
“At any given time we house one-hundred or more local nationals,” said O’Neal. “We ensure they have three hot meals and a place to sleep while we get their trucks unloaded.”
The company’s SSA receives and ships goods ranging from parts for mine resistant ambush protected all terrain vehicles to generators. These goods are kept in the warehouse for use on Camp Leatherneck or shipped as far as Kuwait to support other U.S. and coalition forces. The soldiers operating the SSA maintain meticulous records of each item that comes through their area.
“At any given time, this warehouse has 4,500 items in it,” said Sgt. Michele Seay, a 240th QM Company automated supply logistician from Norfolk, Va. “We track each item as it gets received here and moves to one of six other locations.”
The 240th QM Company, stationed in Bamberg, Germany, continues to manage both the CRSP yard and SSA warehouse. Their goals for the duration of their deployment is to continually improve operations at both sites, said O’Neal.
